Sun Sea and Sex
We have just spent two weeks in Vilamoura on the Algarve. The beaches were beautiful and the sea was azure blue as were the skies. We found a sushi bar on the beach where there were hundreds worshipping the sun day after day. In the evening we enjoyed scrumptious food in a variety of restaurants with exotic cocktails. Rich celebs moored their expensive yachts in the massive marina. In the town we found the usual souvenir shops, supermarkets, open markets, hotels, golf courses and bars. So what am I getting at? This isn't a post card, so why am I writing this in a blog?
In two weeks in Villamoura we never saw a cathedral, church, chapel or shrine though we looked out for one. I have since discovered one church in the nearby, older town of Quarteira through Google.
Villamoura which has been created over the past 40 years was full of hedonism in August and it was built for this end and so presumably churches were superfluous to requirements and never part of the plans. Sad?
