Oranges and Lemons

I walked by the Thames from Blackfriars to Southwark. On the skyline was the Gherkin, The Shard, the Walnut - have I made that one up? the skyline is full of modern sky scrapers. In the midst of all this the 21st century development stands St Paul's Cathedral, majestic and proud a witness to religion in a secular world. A great Catherdral that miraculously survived the Blitz. I have sat outside the Founders Arms, by the thames, and observed the six spires of the City of London I was reminded of the old rhyme.

St. Pauls Catherdral

Oranges and lemons,

Say the bells of St. Clement's.

You owe me five farthings,

Say the bells of St. Martins.

When will you pay me?

Say the bells of Old Bailey.

When I grow rich,

Say the bells of Shoreditch.

When will that be?

Say the bells of Stepney.

I do not know,

Say the great bells of Bow.

Here comes a candle to light you to bed,

And here comes a chopper to chop of your head!
